On Perfection

The other day I had a spiritual moment at a gun service center.

I visited the Glock USA Headquarters because we had a gun that needed a bit of service. It was nothing major – just some upgrades to keep it working reliably. In the service waiting area, there was a television playing a loop of videos. One of those videos was about their company mission statement: Perfection.

Now, I had seen “Glock. Perfection” before; I have one of their patches on my hat. Yet somehow I never realized that it was their mission statement. Not a slogan or a motto – their entire mission statement is just one word. Wow!

(Obviously, I did not come up with that. I could never limit myself to one word. Haha!)

The video went on to state that “Perfection is not an accident.”

The Spiritual Perspective

So as I sat in the lobby spinning yarn and contemplating this video, I remembered hearing someone say, “No one goes to heaven by accident.”

And that is true. Heaven requires perfection.

As Jesus said in the Sermon on the Mount:

Therefore you are to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Matthew 5:48

Yet we know that we are not perfect. Even if we are “Not as bad as insert evil bad guy’s name here,” deep down, we know that we are not perfect. Each of us has messed up sinned. Just one ‘little’ sin destroys our claim to perfection and any chance at heaven.

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all.

James 2:10

So what are we to do?

The Perfect One

Only one man, in all of time, has lived a perfect, sinless life: Jesus Christ.

Knowing that we could not be perfect, Jesus willingly, intentionally left heaven to come into this sinful, messy, imperfect world; lived a perfect, sinless life; and sacrificed Himself on a cross for OUR SIN. Then He was raised to life again, proving He has defeated death.

We can have eternal life because of His perfection.

Praise God!

And so I spent the rest of the day meditating on the wonder of Jesus, the Perfect Lamb of God who died, was resurrected, and will one day return.

I suppose that is not the normal course of thought for individuals visiting the Glock USA Headquarters. But I do not claim to be normal.

The Business Perspective

For those wondering what it was like to visit Glock as a customer:

It was customer service perfection!

Obviously, it is a secure area with guards and restricted entry to both the parking lot and the buildings. Everyone I encountered – from the security guards to the technicians – was professional and courteous. They seemed genuinely happy to be there and to help.

They replaced the springs and other internal parts of the firearm – for free. My gun is brand new on the inside!

(And yes, there is a spiritual lesson there, too. I will ponder that on another day.)
